About Big Sandy Creek

Big Sandy Creek is a 31 mile long tributary to the Cheat River in Preston County, West Virginia.

It originates in Fayette County, PA before crossing the West Virginia state line. From there it takes a slow moving 5 mile course to the dam at Bruceton Mills.

Below Brucetone Mills, Big Sandy becomes a bit more rowdy. Before it eventually meets up with the Cheat River outside Jekinsburg there are several whitewater rapid runs.

The Class V rapid Lower Big Sandy is located between Rockville and Jenkinsburg. Along this route are two waterfalls that rafters can navigate their way over. Wonder Falls is a Class IV while Big Splat is a Class 5.1.

We prefer to stay on the other side of the dam where things move nice and slow. Avid West Virginia whitewater rafters may disagree with us, however.

Kayaking Big Sandy Creek WV

The boat ramp at Bruceton Mills, WV provides an easy spot to launch your Kayak. Slide into the water just upstream of the dam. The water is deep and you won’t have far to paddle to access some fishing that can’t be reached from the shore.

The only downside to kayaking here? You’ll have to paddle upstream. I’ve launched here in years past and it’s a solid workout to get upstream to Clifton Mills Bridge.

By the time you get there you should be pretty worn out. However, you are instantly rewarded with a relaxing float in your kayak back downstream to Bruceton Mills.
